Britain in film
The UK has a starring role in 2013’s huge cinema releases.
Mail time ... Postman Pat is one of Britain's favourite characters to hit the big screen.
BRITAIN is a rising star in Hollywood this year, already appearing in big films such as Jack and the Giant Slayer and Great Expectations. Here are the films of 2013 using British settings, stories and actors:
Charles Dickens' Great Expectations will be released as a blockbuster film in November this year. It stars some of the country's most beloved actors including Ralph Fiennes, Robbie Coltrane, David Walliams, Jason Flemyng and Helena Bonham Carter.
The film also features an array of British locations including Englefield House in Berkshire. You can visit the gardens of this state between April and October. Chatham Historical Dockyard in Kent is also in the film, as well as Wrotham Park, a grade II-listed Palladian mansion in Barnet.
Okay The Hobbit may have been filmed in New Zealand but the stories from J.R.R Tolkien hail back to his days in Birmingham and Oxford. The rolling countryside of Somerset, Malvern Hills and the Shire Country Park on the outskirts of Birmingham were all inspirations for Middle Earth.
Jack and the Giant Slayer
If it isn’t enough to have big stars Ewan Macgregor, Bill Nighy and Nicholas Hoult in this film adaptation of Jack and the Beanstalk, the movie is also set in the Surrey countryside. Norwich Cathedral is the backdrop to this tale of bravery.
The film from Mat Whitecross's is basically a moving picture book of beautiful British locations. The story follows a young band trying to make their way to the infamous Stone Roses gig at Spike Island in Widnes. Location in the film include Bolton, Widnes, Salford, Manchester and Stockport - and sharp eyed viewers may spot Salford University and Bolton Market.
Postman Pat: The Movie - You Know You're The One
Postman Pat and Jess his cat are back in force. The big screen feature-length film brings the postman to life with many of our actors voicing the characters, including Kate Winslet, David Tennant, Rupert Grint and Jim Broadbent. This may be one for the children when it comes out in May, but all Brits love good old Postman Pat.
The World's End
An epic pub crawl is the basis of this film featuring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Martin Freeman. The Hertfordshire's Welwyn Garden City is the setting for this comedy of errors and the iconic English pub plays a very important role in the storyline.
That wraps up our list of Britain on film for 2013. If you spot any UK locations at the cinema let us know so we can share the love with everyone!
